Tidal Analysis and Prediction

AusTides specialises in all aspects of the analysis and prediction of tidal phenomena such as currents and water levels.

I have tested and used a number of third-party tidal packages, as well as written my own software. All have worked well in different circumstances, as long as the underlying assumptions concerning certain radiational constituents are understood and remain consistent in analysis and prediction. Nowadays I mainly use t_tide (below).

I may be able to assist you with developing your own custom-built tools. For example, you may wish to predict tidal currents in a particular area based on limited data as part of a larger system for ship positioning. Let us help you tailor-make a solution.

I am always happy to discuss your marine-related project. Drop me a line. I may be able to provide a solution, or you may decide that with a few tips you can proceed on your own.

AusTides uses and recommends the following tidal analysis and prediction software. (These are all in English. There are other packages in other languages, but I haven’t tried them!):

t_tide: Rich Pawlowicz’ Matlab implementation of the IOS software (below), with significance tests .

The IOS tidal package from the  Institute of Ocean Sciences (Canada).

The JASL software from the University of Hawai’i Sea Level Center (this package incorporates the IOS software).

The Task-2000 software from Proudman Oceanographic Laboratories in the U.K.

Tide Tasks for Windows by the Israel Oceanographic & Limnological Research, an Excel-based version of Task-2000, is made available for research purposes.

The Australian National Tidal Centre (NTC) provides the official predictions for Australia based on its own computer code, which is not made publicly available.
